Aunque la mayoría de los diagnósticos están frecuentemente relacionados con la edad, existen otras causas, como inflamatorias, vasculares, degenerativas, congénitas, autoinmunes, infecciosas o postraumáticas entre muchas otras causas, que logramos identificar a través de un estudio detallado de la retina.

El humor vítreo es un líquido compuesto de colágeno, agua y ácido hialurónico, que está dentro del ojo, ocupando la mayor parte del globo ocular, y esta adherido a la retina por múltiples puntos de anclaje. Este es un fenómeno que da lugar a dos síntomas muy específicos como la aparición de material flotando dentro del ojo que los pacientes lo describen como moscas volantes, y la visión de fenómenos como destellos, flashes o luces de forma semicircular, que suelen aparecer en la noche o en condiciones de poca luz.
